Heading Back to School Made Easier with Resources from the Library

Don’t forget about the public library when you’re putting together your list of things to remember when starting the new school year. It’s got a lot of great resources that can help you finish your homework quickly so you can have time to do other things.

Five resources you might want to check out follow. If you have some of your own to share, feel free to leave a comment.

  • LearningExpress Library.
This online resource is free if you have a library card from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. You can take ACT, SAT, and GED practice tests as well as improve on skills such as Math and Reading. No pressure-you can take the practice tests when it’s convenient for you.
  • Live Homework Help.
You can instant message an online tutor in a variety of subject areas such as Math, Essay Writing, or even SAT prep. Tutors are available for free in English and Spanish from 4pm-10pm EST. Los tutores hispanohablantes están disponibles todos los días, de 4 p.m. – 10 p.m. Este servicio es gratuito.
  • Operation College Launch
Stay tuned for more information on this site. The library is planning a series of programs with community partners starting in the Fall that will be held at branches throughout the system. Programs such as information about financial aid, SAT prep, and applying for college will be included.
  • NCknows
Live online help from a librarian 24/7. Also, during the hours ImaginOn is open, live online help from librarians is available as well via Meebo. The chat box is located at the top right of this page.
  • Studio i
Hopefully you’ll have many opportunities to create a video for a class project. Studio i at ImaginOn is a place you can do this for free. Software includes Pinnacle 12, StopMotionPro, and Final Cut Pro. Staff and interns are always available to show you how to get started.

Hurry up and Read! Teen Summer Reading ends soon

Thanks and Congratulations to all of the teens who participated in Teen Summer Reading 2010!

This summer, over 3000 teens signed up for Teen Summer Reading at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, and over 1000 teens recorded reading 25 hours or more.

But there’s only a short time left to Make Waves @ your library–Teen Summer Reading ends on August 9. So whether you’re desperately trying to finish your school reading list or you read hundreds of hours of Twilight fan fiction back in June . . Monday, August 9 is the last day that you’ll be able to record your reading hours! After that, you’ve got until August 16 to pick up your prizes.

If you read 25 hours or more, you will be automatically entered in drawings for the following:

  • Movie theatre gift cards
  • Carowinds tickets
  • iPod Nano

Winners of those drawings will be notified by August 16. Check out http://www.plcmc.org/teens/tsr/ for more details.

Please take a minute to fill out this survey. Your feedback is appreciated and will help us continue to improve the teen summer reading program.
